The Excavator Part You Need Is Obsolete. Now What?

Your excavator is still doing the job. Your parts supplier, however, has just told you: “Sorry, that part is obsolete.”
For anyone running an excavator, those are words you really don't want to hear.
The machine may be mechanically sound. The engine may have plenty of life left. The hydraulics may be working perfectly. The undercarriage may still have thousands of hours left in it.
But one critical component fails — and suddenly a machine worth hundreds of thousands of rand is sitting idle because the manufacturer no longer produces the part you need.
So what do you do?
Buy a new machine?
Absolutely not.
Park the excavator permanently?
Not necessarily.
Spend a fortune trying to manufacture a replacement?
Sometimes — but usually there are better options.
The reality is that an obsolete excavator part does not necessarily mean an obsolete excavator.

What Does “Obsolete” Actually Mean?
When an OEM tells you that a component is obsolete, it generally means that the manufacturer is no longer producing or supplying that particular part.
It does not necessarily mean:
Nobody has the part.
Nobody can repair the part.
Nobody has a compatible part.
The part cannot be refurbished.
The machine is beyond economic repair.
This distinction is incredibly important.
An excavator can be 10, 15, 20 or even 25 years old and still be an extremely useful and productive machine.
In fact, older excavators often have one major advantage over newer machines:
They are mechanically simpler and much cheaper to keep working.
The problem is that the OEM parts supply chain eventually disappears.
That's when you need to start thinking differently.
Option 1: Find a Genuine Used OEM Part
The first question we ask when someone approaches Vikfin with an obsolete part is:
“Does another machine have one?”
There are thousands of excavators sitting around the world that are no longer economically viable as complete machines. Some have suffered catastrophic engine failures. Others have been rolled. Some have damaged undercarriages. Others have simply become too old or too expensive to operate.
But that doesn't mean every component on those machines is worthless.
Quite the opposite.
A machine that is finished as an excavator can still contain hundreds of thousands of rands worth of usable components.
A final drive can be perfectly good even if the engine is destroyed.
A slew motor can be perfectly good even if the undercarriage is finished.
A hydraulic cylinder can have years of useful life remaining even if the machine itself has reached the end of its working life.
This is where the dismantling model makes sense.
One dead excavator can become the lifeline for several other excavators.
Option 2: Refurbish the Original Component
Sometimes the best replacement for an obsolete component isn't another component.
It's your existing component.
This is particularly relevant to major hydraulic components.
A hydraulic cylinder, for example, may have a damaged rod, worn seals or excessive internal wear.
That doesn't necessarily mean the cylinder itself is scrap.
Depending on the condition, it may be possible to:
Replace seals.
Repair or replace the rod.
Recondition the barrel.
Replace bushes.
Repair mounting points.
Restore damaged surfaces.
Pressure-test the completed cylinder.
The same principle applies to many other components.
A used OEM component can often be refurbished and returned to productive service for a fraction of the cost of buying new.

A properly inspected and refurbished OEM component can be an extremely sensible engineering and financial decision.
Option 3: Look Beyond the Part Number
This is where experience really matters.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when searching for excavator parts is assuming that the part number is the entire story.
It isn't always.
Two components can perform the same function while having different part numbers.
Conversely, two components may look almost identical but have important differences that make them incompatible.
That's why we don't simply ask:
“What's the part number?”
We also want to know:
What machine is it fitted to?
What model?
What serial number?
What year?
What are the dimensions?
What are the mounting dimensions?
What are the hydraulic specifications?
What are the pressure and flow requirements?
What are the pin sizes?
What are the physical connection points?
Are there differences between machine generations?
Sometimes the answer isn't another part with exactly the same number.
Sometimes the answer is a technically compatible alternative.
Brand Isn't Always the Most Important Thing
This is another area where excavator owners can get caught out.
People often assume:
“I have a Komatsu, therefore I need a Komatsu part.”
Not necessarily.
The important question is:
Does the component physically and technically fit and perform the required function?
There are components across different excavator brands that can be interchangeable or adaptable depending on the application.
That doesn't mean you can simply bolt any manufacturer's component onto any excavator.
You can't.
But it does mean that brand should not always be the first and only filter.
Dimensions, specifications and application are often far more important.
This is one of the reasons experienced excavator parts specialists can sometimes find solutions that a conventional dealer cannot.
What About Aftermarket?
New aftermarket parts are another possible solution.
And sometimes they are absolutely the right choice.
But aftermarket isn't automatically better than used OEM.
Nor is OEM automatically better in every situation.
The correct decision depends on:
Price + availability + quality + application + expected lifespan.
For a relatively inexpensive component, a new aftermarket part may make perfect sense.
For a major component costing hundreds of thousands of rand, however, a good used OEM component may provide significantly better value.
The trick is understanding the difference.
The Economics of an Obsolete Excavator
Let's put this into perspective.
Imagine you own a 20-tonne excavator worth R800,000.
The machine is productive and earning money.
A major component fails.
The manufacturer tells you that the part is obsolete.
You now have three choices.
Option A: Replace the machine
You could spend R2 million, R3 million or more on a newer excavator.
That's a significant capital investment to solve what might actually be a relatively small problem.
Option B: Buy a brand-new replacement component
If one exists, it may cost hundreds of thousands of rand.
Again, potentially uneconomic.
Option C: Find a good used OEM component
Suddenly the economics can change dramatically.
You might be able to get the excavator operational for a fraction of the cost of replacing the machine.
And that's the real value of the used OEM parts market.
It allows productive machines to remain productive.
Downtime Is the Hidden Cost
There is another consideration that is often overlooked.
The cost of the part is only one part of the equation.
The real cost of an excavator breakdown is:
Parts + labour + transport + lost production + project delays + customer frustration.
If your excavator generates R5,000 of revenue per hour, a R100,000 component isn't necessarily the most important number.
The bigger number may be the revenue you're losing while the machine is sitting idle.
That's why speed matters.
Finding a part three weeks from now isn't necessarily a solution.
Finding a quality part tomorrow might be.

There is a tendency in the earthmoving industry to assume that newer is automatically better.
Sometimes it is.

An older excavator that is:

Cheap to insure
Economical to operate
can be an extremely valuable asset.
Replacing that machine simply because one component has become obsolete can make very little financial sense.
Instead, you should ask:
“Can I keep this machine working?”
Very often, the answer is yes.
The Circular Economy of Excavators
There is also a bigger story here.
When an excavator reaches the end of its useful life, it doesn't necessarily mean everything on it should go to the scrap yard.
The machine can be dismantled.
Its usable components can be recovered.
Those components can be inspected.
They can be refurbished.
They can be sold.
And they can go back into another working excavator.
In other words:
The life of the excavator doesn't necessarily end when the life of the machine ends.
This is one of the fundamental principles behind Vikfin.

2. Identify the component
Get the part number if possible.
Take photographs.
Measure the component.
3. Ask whether a used OEM component exists
Don't restrict your search to new parts.
4. Investigate refurbishment
Your existing component may be repairable.
5. Check compatibility
Don't assume another part won't work simply because the part number is different.
6. Compare the economics
Compare:
New OEM vs aftermarket vs refurbished OEM vs used OEM vs repair.
7. Factor in downtime
The cheapest part isn't necessarily the cheapest solution if it takes three weeks to arrive.
