The Excavator Parts Nobody Talks About Until They Break

Ask someone to name the most important parts of an excavator and you'll get the usual suspects.

Engine.

Hydraulic pump.

Final drive.

Slew motor.

Maybe the valve bank.

These are the celebrities of the excavator world.

Everybody knows them. Everybody talks about them. Everybody notices when they fail.

But excavators are complicated pieces of machinery made up of thousands of individual components.

And some of the parts that can bring a machine to a complete standstill are the ones nobody thinks about until they're lying broken on the workshop floor.

At Vikfin, we see this all the time.

A customer phones looking for a part that, six months earlier, they probably couldn't even have named.

Now it's the most important part in the world.

Because that's how excavators work.

The part you don't think about is usually the part you desperately need when it breaks.

So here are some of the unsung heroes of the excavator world.


1. Wiring Looms

Nobody gets excited about wiring.

Nobody puts a picture of a wiring harness on their social media with the caption:

"Look at this beauty!"

But modern excavators are essentially computers with tracks.

Sensors.

Solenoids.

Control units.

Joysticks.

Displays.

Valves.

Safety systems.

Everything needs to communicate.

And the wiring loom is the nervous system that connects it all.

When a loom fails, the machine can behave like it's possessed.

A hydraulic function doesn't work.

A sensor gives a false reading.

An engine won't start.

A warning light appears.

A solenoid doesn't activate.

And suddenly everyone starts blaming the ECU.

Sometimes the problem isn't some sophisticated electronic failure.

Sometimes it's simply a damaged wire.

And finding the correct replacement loom for an older excavator can be surprisingly difficult.

Which is precisely why good used OEM looms are worth keeping.


2. Hydraulic Cylinders

Hydraulic cylinders aren't exactly unknown components.

But they're often underestimated.

An excavator has several:

  • Boom cylinder

  • Dipper/stick cylinder

  • Bucket cylinder

And sometimes additional cylinders for attachments and other functions.

These cylinders experience enormous loads every working day.

Eventually, seals wear.

Rods become damaged.

Bushes develop play.

Barrels can become worn.

And suddenly the machine is leaking hydraulic oil everywhere.

The common reaction is:

"We need a new cylinder."

Not necessarily.

A good OEM cylinder can often be rebuilt.

New seals.

Bushes.

Rod repairs where appropriate.

Proper inspection.

And back to work.

That can save a substantial amount of money compared with buying a complete new cylinder.


3. Idlers

Here's a part nobody talks about at the pub.

The front idler.

But if you've ever had a track problem, you'll appreciate it very quickly.

The idler works with the track assembly to maintain the correct track tension and guide the track around the undercarriage.

When it fails, your machine isn't going anywhere.

And because excavators work in some of the nastiest environments imaginable—mud, rock, sand, clay, water and everything in between—the undercarriage takes enormous punishment.

The good news?

A good OEM idler can often be sourced second-hand for substantially less than a new one.

And if you're rebuilding an older machine, there is often no compelling reason to spend a fortune on brand-new undercarriage components when good used OEM alternatives are available.


4. Track Adjusters

If the idler is the wheel at the front of the undercarriage, the track adjuster is the muscle keeping everything under tension.

It's another component that rarely gets any attention until it stops doing its job.

Then you discover very quickly how important it is.

A failed or leaking track adjuster can cause serious track problems.

And again, the choice isn't necessarily:

"Buy a brand-new one."

Depending on the condition and application, a good used OEM track adjuster may be an entirely sensible solution.

The key is getting the correct component.

And that's where excavator parts can become complicated.

A part number isn't always enough.

Dimensions, machine series and configuration matter.


5. Cooler Packs

The engine gets all the glory.

The cooling system quietly keeps it alive.

Radiators.

Intercoolers.

Oil coolers.

Hydraulic coolers.

Air-conditioning condensers.

They're not glamorous.

But heat is one of the great enemies of machinery.

An excavator working in South African summer conditions, pushing hard for hours at a time, generates enormous amounts of heat.

If the cooling system can't get rid of it, something eventually gives.

And when an excavator overheats, the cost can escalate very quickly.

A relatively inexpensive cooling problem can become an extremely expensive engine problem.

So perhaps we should start giving cooler packs the respect they deserve.


6. H-Bars and Dogbones

Now we're getting into the truly unglamorous stuff.

H-bars.

Dogbones.

Bucket linkage components.

Pins.

Bushes.

These components form the mechanical connection between the hydraulic cylinders and the bucket.

They take enormous loads.

And because there is constant movement, wear is inevitable.

When the linkage develops excessive play, digging performance suffers.

You get movement where you don't want it.

Pins and bushes wear.

Holes can become oval.

And suddenly the bucket isn't doing quite what the operator expects.

The solution isn't necessarily a brand-new assembly.

Often these components can be repaired, machined or replaced individually.

Again, the objective is not to replace everything.

It's to restore the machine economically.


7. Counterweights

Here's another part that doesn't get much love.

The counterweight.

It doesn't move.

It doesn't make noise.

It doesn't have seals.

It doesn't have bearings.

It just sits there.

But remove it and you'll discover just how important it is.

The counterweight is fundamental to the excavator's balance and stability.

And if one gets damaged, finding a replacement can be difficult and expensive.

Fortunately, this is exactly the sort of component that makes enormous sense in the used OEM market.

A counterweight doesn't become obsolete simply because the excavator it came from has been retired.

It's still a very large lump of engineered metal.

And if it's undamaged, it can have a very long second life.


8. Exhaust Systems

Another glamorous component.

The exhaust.

Nobody notices it until it starts making an awful noise.

Or leaking.

Or breaking.

Or failing an inspection.

Older excavators can be particularly difficult because original exhaust components may no longer be readily available.

Again, the used OEM market can provide a practical solution.

Why fabricate an entire new system or pay a premium for a new OEM component when a good original exhaust assembly is available?

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one.


9. Bonnet Panels and Bodywork

This one is especially relevant to older machines.

You don't necessarily need a new excavator.

You might just need it to look like an excavator again.

Bonnet panels get damaged.

Side covers disappear.

Doors get bent.

Guards get smashed.

Access panels get lost.

And because these aren't mechanical components, people often assume they don't matter.

But they do.

A damaged machine is harder to maintain.

It can expose components to dirt and weather.

It can create safety issues.

And frankly, a well-maintained machine looks like a well-maintained machine.

Good OEM body panels can often be recovered from machines that are being dismantled.


10. The Little Stuff

And then there are all the parts nobody ever thinks about.

Pins.

Bushes.

Brackets.

Mountings.

Pulleys.

Guards.

Pedals.

Levers.

Steps.

Mirrors.

Fuel tanks.

Hydraulic tanks.

Battery boxes.

Fan shrouds.

And hundreds of other bits and pieces.

None of them are particularly exciting.

Until one breaks.

Then suddenly someone is desperately searching Google at 10pm trying to find one.

This is one of the reasons dismantling machines properly matters.

An excavator isn't just an engine, pump and final drive.

It's a collection of thousands of components, many of which still have useful lives long after the machine itself is finished.


Why We Dismantle Machines

This is really the philosophy behind Vikfin.

When an excavator reaches the end of its economic life, there are two ways to look at it.

You can look at it as:

"An old machine that's worth scrap."

Or you can look at it as:

"A warehouse full of components."

We prefer the second approach.

A machine might be finished as a working excavator.

But its engine might have another 5,000 hours in it.

Its final drive might have years of life left.

Its cylinders can be rebuilt.

Its valve bank can be refurbished.

Its counterweight can be reused.

Its tracks can go onto another machine.

Its wiring loom can solve someone else's nightmare.

Its bonnet can make another excavator whole again.

And its smallest brackets, pins and bushes might be exactly what someone else needs.

That's not scrap.

That's inventory.


The Environmental Argument

There is also a bigger reason for doing this.

Every component we put back into service is a component that doesn't necessarily have to be manufactured again.

That means:

Less raw material.

Less manufacturing.

Less energy.

Less waste.

And less unnecessary transportation.

The most environmentally friendly excavator component isn't necessarily the one made from recycled material.

Sometimes it's the one that doesn't need to be manufactured at all.

It's already sitting in an old machine.

We just need to give it another job.


The Art of Keeping Old Iron Alive

There is something satisfying about keeping an old excavator working.

A 15-year-old machine doesn't necessarily care that a newer model has arrived.

If the engine runs.

If the hydraulics work.

If the tracks turn.

If the cylinders don't leak.

And if the operator can get a day's work out of it—

it's still a productive machine.

And in a world where the cost of new equipment continues to climb, extending the useful life of existing machinery makes more and more economic sense.

That's where good used OEM parts come into their own.


So Don't Ignore the Unsexy Stuff

The next time someone talks about excavator parts, don't just think about engines and hydraulic pumps.

Think about the little things.

The idler.

The track adjuster.

The wiring loom.

The cylinder.

The cooler.

The dogbone.

The H-bar.

The counterweight.

The bonnet.

The exhaust.

The thousands of components that quietly make the machine work.

Because here's the funny thing about excavators:

You don't appreciate most parts until they break.

And when they do?

Suddenly that obscure little component becomes the most important piece of machinery in the world.
