Your Excavator Is Worth More in Parts Than You Think

That old excavator sitting behind your workshop might be worth far more than you realise.
The paint is faded.
The tracks are worn out.
The engine hasn't run in years.
The cab looks like it has been through a war.
And you've probably walked past it a hundred times thinking:
“That's scrap.”
Maybe it is.
But maybe it isn't.
Because when it comes to excavators, the value of the machine and the value of the parts are two very different things.
A 20-tonne excavator that is no longer economically viable as a complete machine can still contain a surprisingly valuable collection of components.
The engine might be worth money.
The final drives might be worth money.
The slew motor might be worth money.
The hydraulic cylinders might be worth money.
The valve bank might be worth money.
The tracks might be worth money.
Even the counterweight, bonnet, bucket, wiring harness and cooling pack can have value.
In other words:
The whole machine might be finished. The parts might not be.
And this is one of the fundamental ideas behind Vikfin.
The “Scrap” Excavator
Let's imagine a fairly typical scenario.
You've got an older 20-tonne excavator.
It has 12,000 or 15,000 hours on the clock.
The engine has failed.
The tracks are almost finished.
The hydraulic system needs attention.
The cab is rough.
The machine hasn't worked for two years.
A dealer tells you:
“It's worth scrap value.”
Perhaps, as a complete machine, that's true.
But here's the problem:
A machine doesn't have to be economically viable as a machine to be economically valuable as a collection of components.
That distinction can be worth hundreds of thousands of rand.
Why Does a Dead Excavator Have Value?
Think about what an excavator actually consists of.
It's not one asset.
It's hundreds — even thousands — of individual components assembled into one machine.
Some of those components wear out faster than others.
Some fail catastrophically.
Others can last for decades.
So when the machine finally reaches the end of its useful life, it is highly unlikely that everything on it is worthless at exactly the same time.
The engine might be dead.
But the slew motor could be excellent.
The tracks might be finished.
But the hydraulic cylinders could still be usable.
The undercarriage could be destroyed.
But the valve bank could be worth a considerable amount.
The machine is dead.
The components aren't necessarily dead with it.
Let's Take a 20-Tonne Excavator Apart
Imagine we buy an old 20-tonne excavator for dismantling.
We're not really buying “an excavator.”
We're buying a collection of potential components.
Depending on the machine and its condition, we might recover:
Engine
A functioning OEM engine can be one of the most valuable components on an older machine.
A contractor with a failed engine doesn't necessarily want to replace his entire excavator.
He may simply want another engine.
Final Drives
These are expensive components and are exposed to enormous loads.
A good used OEM final drive can provide an attractive alternative to buying new.
Slew Motor
Another major component where the cost of a new replacement can be substantial.
A good used or refurbished OEM slew motor can make an otherwise uneconomic repair viable.
Hydraulic Cylinders
Boom, dipper and bucket cylinders can often be refurbished.
The barrel may be perfectly usable.
The rod may be repairable.
The mounting points may be sound.
With the appropriate refurbishment, a component that looks finished can sometimes be given a completely new lease on life.
Valve Bank
The hydraulic valve bank is one of the most sophisticated and valuable components on the machine.
A failure here can bring the entire excavator to a standstill.
A good used OEM replacement can save the owner a substantial amount of money.
Cooling Pack
Radiators, oil coolers and intercoolers can all have value depending on condition.
Tracks
Steel tracks don't necessarily have to be brand new to be useful.
The important thing is whether the dimensions, pitch and other specifications match the application and whether sufficient life remains.
Cab Components
Seats, doors, glass, controls, panels and other cab components can all have value.
Structural Components
Buckets, quick couplers, H-bars, dogbones, counterweights, bonnets and other steel components can all find a second life.
The Sum of the Parts
Here's where things get interesting.
Suppose an old excavator is worth only R100,000 as a complete machine because it doesn't run.
That doesn't necessarily mean the machine's components are worth R100,000 collectively.
They could potentially be worth considerably more.
Why?
Because the person buying the complete machine is buying one non-working excavator.
The people buying the components are buying solutions to individual problems.
That is a completely different market.
A contractor doesn't necessarily want your dead excavator.
He wants the final drive sitting inside it.
Another contractor doesn't want your dead excavator.
He wants the hydraulic cylinder.
Someone else wants the engine.
Someone else wants the valve bank.
Someone else wants the tracks.
And suddenly one dead machine becomes a source of parts for several working machines.
This Is Why Dismantling Makes Economic Sense
The traditional scrap model is brutally simple:
Buy machine → weigh machine → sell metal.
There is nothing inherently wrong with that.
But it ignores something important.
Not all kilograms are created equal.
A hydraulic pump weighing 300 kg is worth considerably more as a functioning hydraulic pump than it is as 300 kg of scrap steel.
The same applies to:
Engines
Final drives
Slew motors
Valve banks
Hydraulic cylinders
Electrical components
Cooling systems
Tracks
Buckets
The real value isn't necessarily in the material.
It's in the function.
A working component has utility.
Scrap metal doesn't.
The Environmental Argument
There is also an environmental benefit to this model.
Manufacturing a brand-new excavator component requires:
Raw materials
Energy
Manufacturing
Transport
Packaging
Processing
But if a perfectly usable OEM component already exists, why manufacture another one?
If an old excavator contains a component with thousands of useful hours remaining, recovering that component and putting it back into service extends its economic life.
That's essentially industrial recycling at the component level.
Instead of:
Old excavator → scrap → new component
you can have:
Old excavator → recovered component → inspection/refurbishment → working excavator
That is a far more efficient use of resources.
OEM Parts Have a Hidden Advantage
There is another reason dismantling makes sense.
A component removed from an excavator is not simply a generic piece of machinery.
It is a known OEM component that was designed specifically for an excavator application.
It has already been engineered.
It has already been manufactured.
It has already been installed in a working machine.
It has already proven that it can perform the required function.
That doesn't mean every used OEM component is automatically good.
Far from it.
A used component needs to be properly assessed.
But it does mean that there is enormous value in recovering genuine OEM components rather than automatically throwing them away.
“But How Do I Know the Part Is Any Good?”
This is the legitimate question.
And it is one of the reasons buying used parts from an experienced specialist matters.
You need to know:
What machine did the part come from?
How many hours did the machine have?
Why was the machine dismantled?
Has the component been inspected?
Has it been tested?
Has it been refurbished?
What exactly was done to it?
What condition is it in?
Is there a warranty?
Can the supplier provide photographs?
Can they provide measurements?
Does it actually fit your machine?
The phrase “used OEM” shouldn't be enough.
There is a massive difference between a component that has simply been pulled from a wreck and thrown onto a pallet and one that has been properly inspected, assessed and, where necessary, refurbished.
The Parts Nobody Thinks About
One of the interesting things about dismantling excavators is discovering just how many components have value.
People naturally think about the big-ticket items:
Engine.
Final drive.
Hydraulic pump.
But there is a huge secondary market for components that might otherwise be overlooked.
For example:
Wiring harnesses
Alternators
Starters
Radiators
Oil coolers
Intercoolers
Exhaust systems
Bonnet panels
Doors
Glass
Seats
Control panels
Joysticks
Swing bearings
Buckets
Quick couplers
Counterweights
Pins and bushes
Hydraulic tanks
Fuel tanks
One component might be worth very little.
But multiply that by dozens or hundreds of components and the economics become compelling.
The Real Skill Is Knowing What to Save
Dismantling an excavator isn't simply a matter of taking everything apart and putting it into a warehouse.
You need to know what is worth recovering.
You need to understand:
Which machines are popular.
Which models have a large installed base.
Which components fail frequently.
Which parts are expensive new.
Which parts are obsolete.
Which components are interchangeable.
Which components can be refurbished.
Which parts are difficult to source.
This is where experience becomes extremely valuable.
A component that looks like scrap to one person might be exactly the component another contractor has been searching for for six months.
The “Amazon of Excavator Parts”

One Dead Excavator Can Save Several Others
This is perhaps the best way to think about the entire business.
Imagine an excavator that has reached the end of its useful life.
It is no longer economical to repair.
Instead of sending the entire machine to the scrap yard, we dismantle it.
Its useful components are recovered.
One contractor buys the final drive.
Another buys the slew motor.
Another buys a hydraulic cylinder.
Another buys the valve bank.
Another buys the tracks.
Another buys the bucket.
Another buys an engine.
Suddenly:
One dead excavator has helped keep six other excavators working.
That's a pretty good second life.
When Should You Sell Your Excavator for Parts?
If you have an old excavator sitting around, there are several questions worth asking.
Is the machine economically repairable?
If a R2 million machine needs a R200,000 repair, the answer might be yes.
If a R300,000 machine needs R400,000 of work, the answer is probably no.
Are replacement parts available?
If critical components are obsolete or extremely expensive, this can change the economics dramatically.
What condition are the major components in?
A failed engine doesn't necessarily mean the final drive, hydraulic cylinders and valve bank are finished.
Is there demand for the model?
A popular machine with thousands of units operating in the field may have considerable parts demand.
What is the value of the machine as components?
This is where specialist knowledge becomes important.
Don't value an old excavator solely on its scrap value.
And What If You Are Buying an Excavator?
The same principle applies in reverse.
If you're buying a non-runner or damaged excavator, you shouldn't only ask:
“What is this machine worth?”
You should also ask:
“What are the components worth?”
That can dramatically change the economics of a purchase.
A machine that looks expensive as a repair project might make perfect sense as a donor machine.
Conversely, a machine that looks cheap might actually be worthless if all its major components are damaged.
The sum of the parts matters.
Giving Excavators a Second Life
This is ultimately what Vikfin is about.
We aren't interested in pretending that every old excavator can be brought back to life as a complete machine.
Some can't.
Some shouldn't.
But that doesn't mean they are worthless.
An excavator that has reached the end of its useful life can become a bank of valuable components.
Those components can be recovered.
Inspected.
Refurbished where appropriate.
Sold.
And put back to work.
The result is a simple but powerful cycle:
Old machine → recovered OEM components → refurbished parts → working machines.
Less waste.
Lower repair costs.
Faster parts availability.
And more excavators kept productive for longer.

Take a closer look.
What engine is in it?
What final drives?
What slew motor?
What valve bank?
What hydraulic cylinders?
What tracks?
What cooling pack?
What bucket?
What other usable components?
You might discover that you've been looking at a pile of scrap.
We might see a warehouse full of parts.
And that's the difference between looking at an excavator as a machine and looking at it as a collection of valuable components.
