Why Experienced Mechanics Prefer OEM Parts Over Cheap Copies


The mechanic who has to fix it twice has a very different definition of “cheap.”
Ask an experienced excavator mechanic what he thinks about cheap aftermarket parts and you might get a very predictable answer.
Probably something along the lines of:
“You get what you pay for.”
But that doesn't quite capture it.
Because experienced mechanics aren't necessarily against aftermarket parts. They understand that there are good aftermarket manufacturers, bad aftermarket manufacturers, excellent replacement components and absolute rubbish.
What they have learned over years of working on excavators is something much more fundamental:
A part doesn't just have to fit. It has to work properly inside a machine that is operating under enormous loads, pressures, heat and vibration for thousands of hours.
And that is why, when the choice is between a proven OEM component and an unknown cheap copy, the experienced mechanic will very often choose the OEM part.
Not because he is impressed by the logo.
Because he has seen what happens when the wrong part fails.
The mechanic sees what the invoice doesn't
The person buying the part usually sees one number.
The mechanic sees everything that comes afterwards.
Suppose an excavator needs a hydraulic component.
The OEM replacement costs R80,000.
A cheap replacement is available for R45,000.
On paper, the decision looks obvious.
Save R35,000.
But the mechanic is thinking about something else.
What happens if the cheaper component doesn't perform correctly?
What happens if the hydraulic pressures aren't right?
What happens if the component overheats?
What happens if it develops a leak?
What happens if it fails after a few hundred hours?
And, perhaps most importantly:
What happens if the machine has to come back into the workshop?
Now you're paying for:
Another part
Another installation
More labour
More hydraulic oil
More transport
More downtime
More diagnostic work
More frustration
Suddenly the R35,000 saving doesn't look quite so clever.
The mechanic isn't necessarily trying to buy the most expensive part.
He's trying to avoid doing the same job twice.
“But it fits…”
This is one of the most dangerous phrases in the excavator parts business.
“But it fits.”
Yes.
So does a cheap pair of shoes.
That doesn't mean you want to walk 20 kilometres in them.
Excavator components are designed to work as part of a system.
A hydraulic cylinder isn't simply a piece of steel with two pins.
A final drive isn't simply something that bolts onto the undercarriage.
A hydraulic pump isn't merely a pump with the correct mounting holes.
Dimensions matter.
Tolerances matter.
Materials matter.
Pressure ratings matter.
Flow characteristics matter.
Internal clearances matter.
Seals matter.
Bearings matter.
Gear ratios matter.
Heat treatment matters.
And the relationship between the component and the rest of the machine matters.
An inexperienced buyer sees a component that looks the same.
An experienced mechanic asks:
“Will it perform the same?”
That's a very different question.
1. Tolerances matter
One of the biggest differences between a properly manufactured OEM component and a poor-quality copy can be something you can't see with the naked eye.
Tolerance.
Two components can look almost identical.
They can have the same dimensions.
They can even bolt straight onto the machine.
But that doesn't necessarily mean their internal tolerances are identical.
In hydraulic systems, for example, small differences can have significant consequences.
Clearances between moving components matter.
Machining accuracy matters.
Surface finish matters.
Seal interfaces matter.
If those things aren't right, you can end up with leakage, heat, premature wear or poor performance.
The mechanic may not know exactly what went wrong at first.
But he will know something isn't right when the machine starts behaving differently.
2. Metallurgy matters
This is another area where photographs can be deceptive.
A cheap copy can look magnificent.
Fresh paint.
Perfect casting.
Shiny machining.
Brand-new packaging.
It can look better than a used OEM component sitting on a workshop floor covered in grease.
But what's happening inside the metal?
That's the question.
The metallurgy of a component affects its strength, fatigue resistance, wear characteristics and ability to survive repeated loading.
An excavator doesn't operate gently.
A boom cylinder can experience enormous forces.
A final drive has to transmit serious torque.
Pins and bushes are subjected to repeated impact and load.
Gears experience continual stress.
Structural components are constantly being loaded and unloaded.
The machine doesn't care whether the part was cheap.
Physics still applies.
3. OEM components were designed for the machine
This is perhaps the biggest reason experienced mechanics trust OEM components.
The original component was designed as part of a complete system.
The engineers weren't simply trying to make something that would bolt onto an excavator.
They were designing a machine.
Hydraulics were matched.
Pressures were specified.
Flow rates were calculated.
Cooling systems were designed around expected heat loads.
Drive systems were engineered around torque requirements.
Bearings, seals, shafts and gears were selected according to expected loads and operating conditions.
The component therefore has a history.
It has a pedigree.
There is an engineering rationale behind it.
That doesn't mean every OEM component is immortal.
It isn't.
Everything wears out eventually.
But it does mean you are starting with a component that was originally engineered for the application.
4. Experienced mechanics know the machines
This is where the human element becomes important.
A good excavator mechanic doesn't just understand parts.
He understands machines.
He knows that a particular excavator has a particular weakness.
He knows which components normally last.
He knows which ones fail early.
He knows which noises are normal.
He knows which hydraulic pressures should make him nervous.
He knows when a component has been rebuilt properly and when someone has simply cleaned it, painted it and called it refurbished.
That experience is enormously valuable.
And one of the things experienced mechanics tend to develop is pattern recognition.
They've seen the failure before.
They've seen the cheap replacement fail.
They've seen the machine come back into the workshop.
They've seen the owner complain.
And they've seen the invoice.
That's why the experienced mechanic can sometimes look at two parts and say:
“I'll take that one.”
Even when the other one is cheaper.
5. Refurbished OEM is a different proposition
There is an important distinction here.
The choice isn't necessarily:
New OEM vs cheap aftermarket.
There is another option.
Refurbished OEM.
And this is where things get interesting.
A good used OEM component has something a cheap new copy doesn't have:
A track record.
It has already been engineered.
It has already been fitted to a machine.
It has already survived real-world operating conditions.
If it is properly inspected and refurbished, you can potentially put a proven OEM component back into service at a fraction of the cost of buying new.
That can make enormous economic sense.
But—and this is important—the word “refurbished” should actually mean something.
Refurbished doesn't mean “washed and painted”
There is a massive difference between:
Used
and
Refurbished.
A used component may simply have been removed from a machine and put on a shelf.
A refurbished component should have been assessed.
Depending on the component, that may involve:
Cleaning
Inspection
Measurement
Wear assessment
Replacement of worn components
Replacement of seals
Checking shafts
Checking bearings
Checking gears
Checking hydraulic surfaces
Pressure testing
Reassembly
Testing where practical
The exact process depends on the component.
A hydraulic cylinder doesn't get refurbished in exactly the same way as a final drive.
A valve bank doesn't get treated the same way as a radiator.
But the principle is the same:
Don't sell the part simply because it came off a machine. Sell it because you understand its condition.
That's the difference between a used part and a properly prepared used OEM part.
6. The cheapest part isn't necessarily the cheapest part
This is where the mechanic and the accountant should actually agree.
Imagine two options.
Option A
Part price: R50,000
Expected life: 1,000 hours
Option B
Part price: R80,000
Expected life: 2,500 hours
Option A looks cheaper.
But the real calculation isn't:
“Which part costs less?”
It's:
“What does each productive hour cost?”
And that's a much more useful question.
Of course, real-world component life is affected by the machine, application, operator, maintenance and operating environment, so nobody can promise a precise lifespan simply from the purchase price.
But the principle remains.
Purchase price is not the same thing as operating cost.
Experienced mechanics understand this instinctively.
7. The installation itself has a cost
Another thing buyers sometimes forget:
Parts don't install themselves.
If a component takes half a day to remove and install, there is a labour cost attached to it.
There may be:
Transport
Crane or lifting equipment
Hydraulic oil
Filters
Consumables
Cleaning
Diagnostics
Testing
Labour
And every time you repeat the job, you pay those costs again.
That's why a mechanic would often rather install one good component than gamble on a cheap one.
He isn't only protecting the part.
He's protecting the job.
8. Cheap copies can create expensive diagnostic problems
This is one of the nastier problems.
A component doesn't always fail spectacularly.
Sometimes it simply doesn't behave properly.
The excavator might feel sluggish.
Hydraulics might run hotter.
A function might be weaker than expected.
A drive might behave differently.
A hydraulic system might develop strange symptoms.
Now the mechanic has a diagnostic problem.
Is the pump faulty?
Is the valve bank faulty?
Is the relief valve set incorrectly?
Is there a restriction?
Is there an electrical problem?
Is the replacement component itself causing the issue?
The machine can end up spending hours in the workshop while everyone tries to work out what has changed.
And sometimes the answer is remarkably simple:
The new part isn't doing what the original part did.
9. This doesn't mean all aftermarket parts are rubbish
Let's be fair.
There are excellent aftermarket manufacturers.
Some produce very good components.
Some aftermarket parts are perfectly suitable for particular applications.
And there are situations where aftermarket makes complete economic sense.
The problem isn't the word aftermarket.
The problem is unknown quality.
There is a world of difference between buying from an established manufacturer with a proven track record and buying the cheapest anonymous component you can find on the internet.
Experienced mechanics know this.
They're not automatically anti-aftermarket.
They're anti-crap.
And frankly, that's a philosophy we can get behind.
10. Sometimes the smartest part is the one with some history
There is something psychologically strange about excavator parts.
People often assume that new automatically means better.
But consider this:
A brand-new component has never worked.
A used OEM component has potentially worked for thousands of hours.
That doesn't automatically make the used component better.
But it does mean that the used component has a history.
It has been through the manufacturing process.
It has been installed.
It has operated.
It has demonstrated that it can work.
If it is properly inspected and refurbished, that history can be extremely valuable.
In the world of earthmoving equipment, proven can be better than new.
The mechanic's golden rule
If you spend enough time around experienced mechanics, you start hearing variations of the same philosophy:
“Don't buy the part twice.”
It's probably one of the best pieces of advice in the entire excavator parts business.
Before buying a component, ask:
What exactly am I buying?
Not just the brand.
Not just the price.
Not just whether it looks right.
Ask:
What is it?
Where did it come from?
What machine did it come off?
What is its condition?
What has been done to it?
Has it been inspected?
Has it been tested?
What evidence is there that it will work?
And perhaps most importantly:
Does the supplier actually understand the component they're selling?
This is where a specialist makes a difference
Buying excavator parts isn't like buying a light bulb.
You can't always type a machine model into Google, find something that looks vaguely similar and click BUY NOW.
Excavators are complicated machines.
Serial numbers matter.
Part numbers matter.
Dimensions matter.
Hydraulic specifications matter.
Application matters.
There can be changes between production years.
There can be different configurations of the same model.
And there can be components that look almost identical but aren't interchangeable.
This is why experience matters.
The best parts supplier isn't necessarily the one with the biggest warehouse.
It is often the one who can look at your photographs, part number, machine details and symptoms and say:
“I know what you're looking for.”
The real value of OEM isn't the badge
This is perhaps the biggest misconception.
Experienced mechanics don't necessarily prefer OEM because they are obsessed with brand names.
They prefer OEM because they know what they're getting.
They know how it was designed.
They know how it was intended to perform.
They know the machine it came from.
They know what commonly fails.
They know what can be refurbished.
They know what should be rejected.
And they know that a component that works properly is worth considerably more than a component that was merely cheap to purchase.
That's the difference between buying a part and solving a problem.

And he definitely doesn't want to remove and install the same component twice.
That's why experienced mechanics often prefer proven OEM components.
Not because new is bad.
Not because aftermarket is always bad.
And certainly not because expensive automatically means good.
They prefer OEM because experience has taught them that quality, compatibility, tolerances and proven performance matter.
And after you've spent enough years covered in hydraulic oil, diesel and grease, you develop a pretty good bullshit detector.
The cheapest part isn't necessarily the cheapest solution.
Sometimes the smartest part is the one that has already proven itself.
And sometimes that part isn't sitting in a shiny new box.
Sometimes it's sitting on a shelf in a parts warehouse, waiting for another excavator to give it a second life.
