One old excavator can become dozens — sometimes hundreds — of opportunities to keep other machines working.
What happens when an excavator reaches the end of its working life?
Most people see scrap.
We see inventory.
More specifically, we see engines, hydraulic pumps, final drives, slew motors, valve banks, cylinders, radiators, tracks, electrical components, cabs, counterweights, attachments and hundreds of smaller components that can potentially give another machine a second life.
This is the fundamental idea behind Vikfin.

At the centre is the engine.

Then there is the undercarriage.

Track frames.
And then everything else:
The cab.
Doors.
Glass.
Seat.
Control levers.
Monitors.
Air-conditioning components.
Counterweight.
Bonnet.
Exhaust.
Fuel tank.
Buckets.
Quick couplers.
H-bars.
Dogbones.
Guards.
Lights.
Panels.
And hundreds of smaller components that most people don't think about until they need one.
Suddenly, that old excavator looks very different.
It's no longer one tired machine.
It's a warehouse on tracks.
The engine may have more value outside the machine
Consider the engine.
An old excavator might no longer justify an expensive engine rebuild.
But that doesn't necessarily mean the engine has no value.
Perhaps another machine has suffered catastrophic engine failure.
Its owner doesn't want to spend R300,000 replacing the entire machine.
They might rather install a good used OEM engine.
Now the engine from the dismantled excavator has a second life.
The same thing can happen with a hydraulic pump.
A final drive.
A slew motor.
A valve bank.
A radiator.
A hydraulic cylinder.
One machine that has reached the end of its useful life can therefore become the solution to multiple problems elsewhere.
The magic is in the components
This is what makes the dismantling business so fascinating.
Imagine we buy an excavator for R500,000.
If we simply resell the machine, perhaps the market tells us it's worth R550,000.
That's not particularly exciting.
But suppose we dismantle it.
The engine might be worth R100,000.
The hydraulic pump R60,000.
The two final drives R40,000 each.
The slew motor R30,000.
The valve bank R40,000.
The cylinders collectively R50,000.
The cooling pack R25,000.
The tracks and undercarriage R50,000.
The cab and electrical components R30,000.
The attachments R30,000.
And then there are dozens or hundreds of smaller components.
Suddenly the economics look completely different.
The value wasn't necessarily in the machine.
It was hidden inside the machine.
Of course, these numbers are illustrative. Every excavator is different, and not every component will be saleable or worth refurbishing.
But the principle remains.
Not everything is worth saving
This is where experience matters.
A dismantler doesn't simply take an excavator apart and put every component on a shelf.
That would be a very expensive way to collect junk.
The real skill is identifying what has residual value.
Some components are obvious.
A relatively clean engine with good compression and service history may be valuable.
A hydraulic pump that can be tested and refurbished may be valuable.
A good final drive may be highly sought after.
A straight hydraulic cylinder with good chrome may be worth saving.
But other components may have little or no commercial value.
Some are too badly damaged.
Some are obsolete.
Some cost more to refurbish than they are worth.
Some simply aren't in demand.
The dismantler therefore has to make a series of decisions:

That's where the economics become interesting.
The parts nobody thinks about
There's another fascinating aspect to dismantling excavators.
Some of the most valuable parts aren't necessarily the biggest ones.
Everyone notices the engine.
Everyone understands the value of a hydraulic pump.
But try finding a replacement bonnet for a 15-year-old excavator.
Or a counterweight.
Or a specific wiring harness.
Or an electrical control module.
Or a particular cab component.
Or a door.
Or a bucket linkage component.
These aren't glamorous parts.
But when yours is damaged, they suddenly become extremely important.
And because manufacturers don't necessarily continue producing every component indefinitely, an old machine can become increasingly dependent on the used-parts market.
That's where dismantling becomes particularly valuable.
The older the machine, the more valuable the dismantler can become
There is a point in every machine's life where the economics change.
When a machine is new, the manufacturer is usually the obvious source of parts.
The machine is supported.
Parts are available.
Dealers have stock.
Technical information is readily accessible.
But as the machine gets older, things change.
Parts become more difficult to find.
Prices rise.
Lead times increase.
Certain components become obsolete.
And eventually, the used-parts market becomes increasingly important.

There is also a significant environmental benefit.
Manufacturing heavy equipment components requires:
Raw materials
Steel
Aluminium
Copper
Energy
Manufacturing capacity
Transportation
Labour
If a perfectly serviceable component already exists, there is an argument for keeping it in circulation rather than manufacturing another one from scratch.
This doesn't mean every used component is automatically better.
A badly maintained or unsafe component shouldn't be put back into service simply because it can be.
Quality matters.
Testing matters.
Inspection matters.
But where a component can be safely reused or refurbished, extending its useful life makes economic and environmental sense.
Refurbishment changes the equation
There's a big difference between selling a component that has simply been removed from a machine and selling one that has been properly refurbished.
Take a hydraulic cylinder.
A dismantler might remove it from an old excavator and sell it exactly as it came off the machine.
Or it can be inspected.
The cylinder can be stripped.
The barrel can be checked.
The chrome rod can be inspected.
Wear can be assessed.
Seals can be replaced.
Bushes can be replaced where necessary.
The component can be reassembled and tested.
Now you're not simply selling an old hydraulic cylinder.
You're selling a reconditioned component with a new lease on life.

A warehouse full of parts is useless if nobody knows what they fit.

Production year
Component number
Physical dimensions

Track pitch
Link dimensions
Pin diameter

Barrel length

Pressure specifications
This is why the best dismantlers aren't simply scrapyards.

A parts warehouse is really a library of machine knowledge
Walk into a good excavator-parts warehouse and you might see hundreds of components.
To an outsider, it can look like organised chaos.
To someone who knows what they're looking at, it's a database.
A particular hydraulic pump tells a story.
A final drive tells a story.
A valve bank tells a story.
A cylinder tells a story.
The component number tells you something.
The dimensions tell you something.
The machine it came from tells you something.
The condition tells you something.
And the history of failures across thousands of machines tells you something else.

Ultimately, this isn't really about dismantlers.
It's about the guy whose excavator is sitting in a yard.

It's about the mine that needs an excavator back in production.
For them, the value of the dismantled machine is very simple.
It might contain the part they need.
And if that part is available immediately, it can turn a very expensive breakdown into a manageable repair.
One dead machine can save another

Eventually you have spent so much money that you could have bought another machine.
Knowing when to stop repairing a machine is just as important as knowing how to repair one.

“How much is the whole machine worth?”
It's found by asking:
“How much is everything inside it worth?”
