It doesn't run.
The tracks are worn.
The paint is faded.
The cab looks like it has survived a war.
The engine may be completely finished.
And you've probably walked past it hundreds of times without giving it a second thought.
Perhaps you've even thought:
“One of these days I'll send it to the scrap dealer.”
Before you do that, stop.
Because that old excavator might not be worth very much as an excavator...
…but it could be worth a surprising amount as a collection of components.
And that is a completely different way of looking at an old machine.

As a complete non-runner, perhaps someone offers you:

As scrap metal, maybe:
R100,000.
But let's imagine that it still contains:

Good slew motor
Good hydraulic cylinders
Good valve bank
Good cooling pack
Good bucket
Good counterweight
Good tracks
Good electrical components
Those components could potentially be worth substantially more than the value of the machine as a whole.

Popular Machines Make Better Donors
This is why experienced dismantlers pay close attention to machine populations.
If there are lots of a particular excavator model operating in South Africa, there are potentially lots of owners who will eventually need parts.
Think about it.
If 2,000 excavators of a particular model are working in the country, every one of those machines represents a potential future customer.
And machines wear out.
Components fail.
Accidents happen.
Hydraulic cylinders leak.
Final drives fail.
Engines need replacing.
Valve banks develop problems.
Eventually:
Someone needs your part.
The Older the Machine, the More Interesting the Parts Can Become
Here's another interesting dynamic.
As a machine gets older, OEM support can become increasingly expensive or difficult.

Your old excavator may have reached the end of its life.

A good used final drive can keep a machine working.
A good hydraulic cylinder can prevent an otherwise unnecessary machine replacement.
A used valve bank can save an owner hundreds of thousands of rand.
A good engine can turn a non-runner into a working machine.

Here's where things can get technical.
You can't simply remove a component and advertise:

You need to know exactly what you've got.

Part number
Component number
Machine hours

Photographs

The more information you can provide, the easier it becomes to sell.
And the easier it becomes for a customer to establish compatibility.

Find the machines that contain them.
Start with the market and work backwards.
The Donor Machine Strategy
There's another interesting application.
Suppose you own a fleet of 20-tonne excavators.
You have eight machines of the same model.

You could sell it for scrap.
Or you could retain it as a donor machine.
Now you've potentially got a private parts warehouse.
Need a:

You've got one.
Hydraulic cylinder?

For a large fleet, this can make enormous sense.

Inventory value isn't just about what something is worth.

How badly somebody needs it.
A common component that regularly fails can be more valuable than a rare component that almost never fails.
If a final drive fails regularly across a large population of machines, there's an ongoing market.
If a particular decorative panel almost never gets damaged, demand may be limited.
This is why dismantling requires understanding failure patterns.
Failure Knowledge Is a Competitive Advantage
If you dismantle enough excavators, you start noticing patterns.
You learn:
These machines commonly need this.
That model often has problems with that component.
This cylinder is frequently damaged.
Those final drives are difficult to source.
That engine is used across several models.
That knowledge helps determine what machines are worth buying.
And it helps determine what components are worth recovering.

Potential cross-model compatibility can increase the market.
What are the parts worth individually?
Don't value the machine only as a whole.
What does scrap pay?
This gives you your minimum valuation.
Who could use the components?
Demand is everything.
Don't Throw Away the Parts Market
South Africa has thousands of older excavators still working.
Many of these machines are economically productive precisely because they are cheaper to own than newer machines.
But they need parts.
And as those machines age, the demand for affordable replacement components increases.
That creates a fascinating ecosystem:
Old excavator → dismantling → usable OEM components → repaired excavator → more productive life
It's a cycle.
And it makes economic sense.
There Is Also a Sustainability Argument
Earthmoving machinery is resource-intensive.
Manufacturing an excavator requires enormous quantities of:

If a machine reaches the end of its useful life but 40% of its components are still perfectly usable, throwing everything into a scrap pile isn't necessarily the best use of those resources.

Keep excavators working for longer.
If an excavator can economically work for another five years because we supplied a good used final drive, that's a win.
If a farmer can avoid replacing a machine because we found a replacement hydraulic cylinder, that's a win.
If a plant-hire company can get a machine back to work tomorrow instead of waiting three weeks for a new OEM component, that's a win.
And if an old excavator that was destined for scrap can supply components for ten other machines...
That's a very good outcome.
So, What's That Old Excavator Really Worth?
The answer depends on how you look at it.
As a working machine:
Maybe very little.
As scrap:
Maybe a little more.
As a collection of usable components:
Potentially a lot more.
That's why we always say:
Don't look at an old excavator as one asset.
Look at it as a collection of assets.
The engine is an asset.
The final drives are assets.
The hydraulic cylinders are assets.
The valve bank is an asset.
The slew motor is an asset.
The tracks are assets.
The bucket is an asset.
Even the counterweight is an asset.
And if you understand the market, you can potentially unlock value that would otherwise disappear into a scrap yard.

Maybe you've got one sitting behind the workshop.
Maybe it's been there for three years.
Maybe you've stopped thinking about it.

“It's scrap.”
Before you make that decision, take another look.
Find the model.
Find the serial number.
Take some photographs.
Look at the major components.
And get someone who understands excavator parts to assess it.
You might discover that the machine you've written off...
